This fall I have had the privilege of bringing on an intern, Kyle Wheeler, one day a week. Kyle is a gifted graphic designer (see below) and has been learning web design as well as the ins-and-outs of freelancing.
At first, I resisted the idea of taking on an intern, because I find working solo enables me to flow on creative projects with less interruption. But I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the collaboration. Kyle has a keen eye for design and it’s been helpful to bounce ideas off one another other. His input on web projects has also been fantastic – he introduced me to the acronym tl;dr which has become my new litmus test for web design.
I’m still not a fan of collaboration at all times in creative work – solitude can be vital for creativity – but this has been a win-win. For those of you who are freelancers, I encourage you to give it a shot. (Fellow Canadians: the gov’t will actually pay your summer interns through their Canada Summer Jobs program.)
